Gustave Le Gray initiated a generation of amateur photographers from a wide range of social backgrounds. With the master’s help, they invented an aesthetic that broke away from the classical teachings of the Beaux-Arts. Foreshadowing the modernist movement by over 70 years, these photographers created images that astound with their audacity.

When Adel Abdessemed’s work first appeared on the art scene in around 2000, it was perceived as a response to the convulsive vicissitudes of the contemporary world, using the language of art to capture all their characteristic energy and violence.

At once poetic and metaphysical, Mircea Cantor’s works have made the artist quite a figure in the new geography of contemporary art. A self-styled rootless wanderer, Mircea Cantor has made himself a name on the contemporary art scene through a series of works so subtle yet radical, that their material seems to be the very stuff that dreams are made of.

In the autumn of 2012 the Musée Carnavalet, a hub for the history and patrimony of Paris, is presenting a brand new retrospective devoted to 17th-century painting in the city’s churches: some 120 paintings, drawings and engravings from collections in France and abroad are being brought together here for the first time.

The exhibition takes an idiosyncratic look at 20th century art and offers a novel reading of modern and contemporary art. The works have been chosen not according to traditional classifications, but according to the deep affinities between artists endlessly in search of new forms and figures.

Jean Tinguely in Reliefs: eleven masterpieces—some never before seen—remind us of the profound originality of this sculptor. Jean Tinguely: a name that tintinnabulates, resonates and seemingly echoes the works exhibited. A name that reminds each of us of the fantastic handyman that created pieces which invite the viewer to look and listen.

Both the ethnologist and the anthropologist describe and compare different forms of society. In collecting data in situ, the ethnographer wades in upstream of the anthropologist. It is at this same point that Jean-Pierre Attal has chosen to step in, exploring the anonymous privacy of urban society.

This exhibition shows the different ways in which artists perceive fire, a phenomenon that has always been a fascination. The living aspect of flames, the moving play of light and shadow, and the range of colours they produce, makes them into cultural tools, considered a real source of inspiration for artists.

On the 6th of October Nuit Blanche takes place, under the auspice of fluidity. A course will lead the length of the Seine from the Maison de la Radio in the west to Ivry in the east. The artistic director, Laurent Le Bon, intended a perambulation without beginning or end, a walk along the banks of the river which accentuates the town, its ambiance.
