I suggested the artists to choose a media on their own, so that space fully becomes an element of their work. The title of the exhibition focuses on the pair, object (or action) and place, as a pun on two common expressions, “This and that” and “Here and there”, the intention being at the same time to question and prompt connections with the environment.

Written like a score, Raymond Gervais’ installation places Debussy and Beckett in dialogue, re-staging them towards the end of their creative process, when they were respectively wondering about the possible failure of their production, asking themselves how they should finish, “how” and “what to do” — because finishing still entails doing something.

As a preliminary to the opening on April 19 at 20.00, the Palais de Tokyo is partly opening up during 2 days and will offer 28 hours of events, concerts, performances, conferences and shows: an intense, fast-motion, hallucinatory glimpse of the energy that is going to be invested in the Palais de Tokyo over the next few years.

"My dear Sir,
A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. That is all that is to be said about our relations to flowers. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. It is accidental.
All this is I fear very obscure. But the subject is a long one."

Séances is a new addition to the Conatus series that Achour began back in 2006. Plunged in partial darkness, a range of elements form a setting/ landscape that visitors are meant to wander around for 45 minutes. Films, sculptures, sounds… yet not a single actor or live event: the combination of formal elements makes this art piece more akin to a show or spectacle.

The Almine Rech Gallery presents the first exhibition in Paris of Liu Wei, the artist spearheading the new Chinese art scene. While refusing the principle of an identifiable style and conventional aesthetic criteria, Liu Wei translates the chaos of Beijing through his work, in an attempt to perpetuate the precepts of the Confucian tradition.

As a meditation on the destructiveness of an obsessive need to know, “L’homme qui voulait savoir” (“The Man Who Had to Know”, English release title “The Vanishing”) by G. Sluizer gives the exhibition its title. David Raymond Conroy uses the dynamics of cinema to create a space in which artist, work and viewer seek each other out about their relative positions.

“Navy Legacy” conjures images of an expansive blue plane of ocean and the streamlined vessels that travel across these surfaces. Legacy is defined as thing handed down by a predecessor, that prevails and continues, as an object, an original idea or vision. Steinbach employs art historical references and builds new roles into a host of objects.

Do we still have to present John Crash Matos, this street artist pioneer born in Bronx in 1961 ? Addict Galerie presents “Study in Watercolors”, a selection of preliminary studies, and brings to light the sketch work of graffiti, often relegated to the background to a mode of expression sometimes assimilated to a spontaneous blowout of the imagination.

As Baudrillard wrote, appearances are immortal, invulnerable to the meaning or of non-meaning itself. Art is a matter of imitation, often an imitation of art itself, for better or for worse; and that it carries illusions, their correlative disenchantments, but also, of course, seduction.

To Thomas Lélu each image collected must face multiple assaults, extracted from its original context where it was used for both justification and protection. It is sometimes covered, sealed, recessed as its main figure, or put in the frontal confrontation with a text leading to implosion. The confrontation is often blind, but not the least illuminating.

A number of themes crucial to Raphaël Zarka’s work come together in the exhibition Les Prismatiques : his interest for geometry, the transposition of elements from the world of painting to the world of sculpture, the construction of a body of forms developed on the model of a collection.

Société Réaliste experiments with their typography by presenting ornamental accumulations of Monotopia, reproducing the rythmics of political mantras, mixing the fundamental directions, researching the connections between number and dates, trying to define the shape of any date and any place, registering the common transversality of time and space, or refusing to inscribe the privative u- of Utopia.
