The Musée Guimet presents an international exhibition around the theme of chinese scholars’ rocks. Lovingly gathered and placed in their studios, these scholars’ stones constituted miniature mountains, microcosms, which colors or texture would evoke that of an actual mountain, landscape or rocky path, as an open door to daydreams.

The exhibition retraces the slow, deliberate and complex genesis of Leonardo’s Saint Anne, left unfinished at the artist’s death in 1519, by bringing together for the first time archival documents, composition sketches, landscape studies and studio versions showing the various formal and iconographic solutions successively imagined by the master.

Christopher Wool has been exploring the complexities of abstract painting by constantly questioning the medium with ever fresh means. The exhibition focuses on about 30 large-format works painted between 2000 and 2011. Exposing a hard-earned freedom, his most recent paintings combine silkscreen printing techniques with hand-painted passages.

“My life follows the course it has been assigned from above”. These words pronounced by Albrecht Durer on the eve of his own wedding could well apply to the youthful Fabien Mérelle who recently became a father. Do we read there a special correspondence between the two artists, separated otherwise by five centuries?

Mireille Blanc immediately catches one’s eye. Her paintings do not reveal themselves at first glance, but instead must be looked at again and again for answers. For many years the subjects of her paintings were the ambiguity and uncertainty surrounding objects. Blurring the line between reality and art, her photography is born of abstraction.

Nelson Leirner began his career among a dynamic group of Brazilian Conceptualists in the early 1960’s with art that was politically pointed and visually sparse. As this show demonstrates, the political edge has stayed sharp even as the work has gained in material density.

Huang Yu-Xing’s paintings atract us beyond the visible in a strong magnetic universe, which unwind us from any known mark. This loss of spatial marks distils an anxiety in almost all of the paintings. The paintings also unveil a feeling of depth and mystery.

Throughout history of art, the space in the picture would sometimes serve to represent urban areas; however, Thierry Costesèque manages to overturn this perception: the city now becomes a picture of its own. This effect allows the viewer to realise the significance of his position as part and parcel of a constantly evolving collective image.
