“Paires et Séries”, featuring some sixty paintings, will examine a distinctive aspect of Matisse’s art. His repeated exlorations of the same subject through variations of framing, draughtsmanship, brushwork and color, are for him a way of exploring at itself, and for the spectator, the way to understand the line of development of his work as a whole.

During the entire ten year period of the project — 1929-1939 — Berenice Abbott produced the finest record ever made of an American City. Her point was graphically to capture the times, to make a record, in as artistic a fashion as possible, that would be of use to historians, sociologists and even art critics.

José María Sert, a scenic artist, was constantly looking for commissions and worked for personalities from the economic and political world, firstly in Paris and then in Europe and America. This proximity confronted him with the complexities of his era and he made some controversial political choices.

Sister-in-law of Edouard Manet and close friend of Degas, Renoir, Monet, and Stéphane Mallarmé, Berthe Morisot became one of the Impressionists most innovative, least dogmatic artists. From early portraits to landscapes bordering on abstraction,150 paintings, watercolours and drawings illustrate the rich diversity of her artistic experimentations.

After 25 years of underwater excavations, spectacular pieces recovered from the river reveal the glory of ancient Arles : architectural fragments, everyday objects, as well as magnificent examples of Roman statuary and metalwork, offer a fresh perspective on the first city on the Rhône and make it possible to experience its ancient splendor.

You might say there are two kinds of artists. The ones who spend their whole lives working on a specific question and those who blow apart all too soon, in mid-flight — in which case, picking up the pieces calls for an atlas and a good GPS. The map shows the great Winshluss deflagration saturating a territory extending from sculpture to drawing, from comics to the movies.

“Après tout rien” is a journey in Another World. “I lost the ground and travelled in mind. I left a sterile world, and came alongside a mineral and icy, but pure and demanding country. I was met by its motto on a glass banner that said we were not clear enough with ourselves. The trip must be internal too: it is the key to live in my world.”

“Arthur Rainbow” tweaks Rimbaud’s name and suggests a rereading of “Voyelles”, the iconic poem of Symbolist synaesthesia. Whatever the message and the medium, this group exhibition will freely associate works whose common feature is granting colour a liberating — not to say ecstatic — power, and among a host of qualities, that of bringing people together.

What really lies behind a drawing? Ideas don’t come out of nowhere. Though the classical definition of drawing (the disegno, the intention) directly involves the power to express concepts, what are their sources and what forms do they imply? Mrzyk & Moriceau offer two possible answers to this double-barrelled question.

The new cycle initiated by Hunter Gatherer focuses on drawing as a the tangible proof of the existence of a psychic universe. As a way to communicate what cannot be said, it appears as a place where everything is possible, the beginning of an idea, and show the page up for what it is: a black hole, a channel straight to the artist’s brain.

Claire Fontaine uses her freshness and youth to make herself a whatever-singularity and an existential terrorist in search of subjective emancipation. She grows up among the ruins of the notion of authorship, experimenting with collective protocols of production, détournements, and the production of various devices for the sharing of intellectual and private property.

“Acte ordinaire” (“Ordinary act”), is grounded in an everyday undisguised reality to which Ji-Yeon adds a theatrical dimension. The viewer is confronted with carefully dramatized characters, heroes of everyday situations. However, the artistic process questions the strange within the mundane, and discomfort settles in fairly quickly…

Common in both natural and urban environments, the debris is the notion around which Nathalie Brevet and Hughes Rochette have based their exhibit. Its title is emblematic of their approach : in their scavenging, the two artists collected and chose objects that have come to the end of their functional life, but begin the fictional part of it, as a shape.

“Scrambled…” as in scrambled eggs, but also as in radio signal, that lives as a parasite, that mixes, no unambiguous reading of either the cocktail glass, nor the bottle in the sea which never arrives to the addressee. This exhibition is also of haste, images that are in motion crowd, in an urgency which comes only from themselves.

As a worthy child of postmodernism, David Renggli plays with contradictions proper to representations of his time, setting up the absurd and the arbitrary as a homogenising principle. A hand pulling a rabbit out of a hat: this might be the formula that sums up the act of creation; reestablishing the arbitrary and the absurd as the roots of the gesture.

“Der Willkommene Fremde” is Mathew Hale’s second exhibition at the Galerie Michel Rein. The Beggar’s Opera consisted of an extended performance in which Dora García adopted the character of Filch, who first appeared in the opera of the same name by John Gay and later in Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera. An actor inhabited this character and wandered around the town meeting with locals and tourists.

Throughout his career, Degas constantly represented the nude, readily repeating poses he had used several decades previously. Therefore, more than any other genre, the nude demonstrates his stylistic evolution, from his early classical training based on the copy of ancient masters to his late research into movement the radical approach to forms.
