If Roland Barthes is right to say that myth, today, is depoliticized speech, what can we say about the works of Gavin Benjamin but that they are of a mythical re-politicized speech? Constantly looking for a way to create images that recycle their historical dimension, he allows his viewers to find their historical depth.

The unveiling that Julien Beneyton recalls in this series is not only a story of lifted clothes. Twenty-four paintings like twenty-four portraits, and shared memories. He paints the flesh, what it says and what it remembers. He reveals the soul inked in the body.

Josef Hofer is not merely an example of such artists: he is the very archetype. Arnulf Rainer, a leading collector of his work, describes him as “the greatest” of all contemporary Brut artists. Hofer is a candid Narcissus whose reputation has spread beyond a small circle of specialists for nearly ten years now.

Taysir Batniji creates a discrepancy between a highly referenced way of representing images and themes peculiar to war reporting.

In each work, the reflexivity of the artist’s chosen support — sprinkled with light revelations — parallels the artist’s quest; he finishes by discovering, among the many forgotten strata, the perfect gap, a window within all the colors. His search for surprises yields an opportunity: the fugitive beauty of the being of the painting.

Grey Area Multiples presents a new show of editions bringing together several works that take some aspect of history as their starting point. The show is about an unstable past and ways of reworking it. It is about untruths and nostalgia, and above all it is about making a new history.

For Arnaud Labelle-Rojoux the “parodic” is much more than simple satire, so carnival in this context is something that goes beyond a set of immediate pranks. Nor is it exactly the common or thematic denominator of a certain number of his pieces, whether near or far.

(French only) Arnaud Aimé, Estèla Alliaud, Sandra Aubry, Arnaud Bergeret, Yves Koerkel, Antoine Miserey et Sandra Schmalz quittent le bureau de Jeune Création. Katinka Bock usually presents memories as impressions in the form of rubbings, foldings or even as a puddle of water on the floor of an exhibition space. As relics revealing the temporality of the creative process, her works testify to a kind of stasis, or perhaps an internalisation of actions. Katinka Bock runs the r…

Rendered in exaggerated perspective, a foreshortened steel I-beam is a familiar fiction. It signifies productivity and speed and all the optimism of the early machine age. But it is also a perceptual bubble which will inevitably burst. If the process of steel production starts at a foundry or a mill, it sometimes ends with an oxy-acetylene torch.

Top 100 was born in 2003 when Davide Bertocchi asked 100 curators and critics a very simple question, though full of symbolic implications: the title of their favorite song, that unique and only song, for example, that they would bring with them to a desert island.

Past
The first, at Air de Paris, comprises two new films and a series of new structures. The first film is derived from a filmed tour, in idealised form, of the Kalmar Volvo factory, shot in the early 1970s. The second film is developed from a short clip of a group of car workers sitting inside a metal machine press, having to bend over each time the press.
