Métropolis

(French only) L’exposition Metropolis permet de découvrir le film à travers son scénario, du prologue dans la cité moderniste à la scène finale dans la cathédrale. La Cinémathèque française a la chance de posséder une collection unique au monde : plus de 800 photographies de plateau originales, des dessins originaux des décorateurs.

Mailles — Art en laine

International contemporary art has replaced brush and paint with wool and knitting needles. From 19th October the Maison du Danemark transforms itself into a universe of soft and multi-coloured woollen sculptures and installations. An exhibition which introduces and reveals the evolution of the new contemporary art of knitting and crochet work.

Following his widely noticed participations in Salon de Montrouge and contemporary drawings fair “Salon du Dessin Contemporain 2011” in Paris, João Vilhena, artist of Portuguese origin living in Nice, will exhibit in Alberta Pane Gallery from October, 20th to November, 19th.

Yang Jiechang, Tale of the 11th day — exposition en deux volets

Following Yang Jiechang’s solo exhibition “On Ascension” at the gallery in 2008, the gallery presents a two-part exhibition by the artist entitled “Tale of the 11th day” in our two Paris spaces, left and right bank. The two-part exhibition marks our commitment to an artist whose work we have been following for over 20 years.

Slick 2011 — Contemporary Art Fair

For the second consecutive year, the 2011 Slick Art Fair will be pitching a 2,000m2 marquis tent on the esplanade between the prestigious Palais de Tokyo and Paris’ Museum of Modern Art. More than 40 international galleries and thousands of photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos and installations will be unveiled during the fair.

Wolfgang Tillmans

Over the past 20 years, Tillmans has redefined photography and the way it is presented. Known in the early 1990s for his seemingly casual images of the world he inhabited, his work reassessed photographic conventions and reflected the culture and identity politics of the time, capturing the fragility of human life and focusing on everyday objects.

Aaron Young — Always Forever Now

I always liked the saying “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” It has a nice balance. If I were to name a few things I want out of an artwork they would be aggressive in action, poetic in rythm, realistic in scale, seductive in intellect and sinister in timing. Olivier Kosta-Théfaine — Monde sauvage

On the mode of the appropriation and the diversion, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine extracts characteristic elements of the city to throw them, once reinterpreted, in the exhibition space. By taking support on clichés usually conveyed on the suburb to thwart them better, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine filters and recomposes the codes belonging to the city.

Alex Katz — Face the Music

The American artist Alex Katz presents a new sequence of canvases, studies in oil, cartoons and drawings, all pertaining to dance. One of the undisputed key figures of American pop art, since the early 1950s he was already preparing the way for pop art.

Banks Violette — Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children

Galerie Thaddeus Ropac present an exhibition of works on paper by New York artist, banks Violette. The artist is most well known for his sculptures and large-scale installations that often explore subcultural communities, in a stark, enigmatic yet minimal aesthetics.

Prix Marcel Duchamp

(French only) Mircea Cantor est Lauréat du Prix Marcel Duchamp. Après avoir considéré la qualité des œuvres présentées, le choix du jury s’est porté sur Mircea Cantor a indiqué Alfred Pacquement. L’œuvre dense et protéiforme de cet artiste s’empare de phénomènes issus de la société contemporaine dont il propose des représentations symboliques.

Salon Light #8

(French only) Chaque année, le Cneai organise le Salon Light au Point Ephémère, salon dédié à la micro-édition et à la publication d’artistes. Lancé en 2010, ce prix a pour ambition de contribuer au rayonnement et de favoriser la pratique éditoriale d’un éditeur indépendant.

Visual Thinking and Measured Painting

(French only) Le parcours de Wang Luyan a la particularité d’être aussi rare qu’atypique. Autodidacte, il a néanmoins réussi à s’imposer ce qui lui a valu d’être considéré comme un artiste « alternatif ». Pour sa première exposition en France, Wang Luyan investira les 2 espaces de la galerie où il exposera environ 30 peintures.

Le Royaume et l’Exil — Premier volet : L’urbanité des mediums

For the first time ever, Backslash gallery invite two exhibition curators to the gallery. The guest curators will successively be taking a personal approach to developing two intertwining themes, nature and the urban space. Christophe Le Gac and Gaël Charbau will each be creating a show that draws on an assumed opposition between city and country.

Annette Messager — Mes dessins secrets, Mon guide du tricot et Ma collection de champignons bons et de champignons mortels

(French only) Artiste-collectionneuse et bricoleuse, Annette Messager a réalisé près d’une soixantaine d’albums-collections entre 1972 et 1974. Puisant son inspiration dans les mots, les écritures et les images, l’artiste compose ses albums à partir d’une accumulation de textes, de photographies, de notes et d’articles divers, minutieusement collectionnés et triés.

(French only) Dans cette exposition il y a des articles de magazines, autant d’éléments qui nous mènent au fameux poster de Robert Morris s’étant représenté enchaîné et casqué, publié par la galerie Castelli-Sonnabend en 1974 ainsi que la publicité que Lynda Benglis fera dans Artforum la même année.

The visitors will be confronted with the idea of “Art as Art”.

Liam Gillick — Sit in the Machine

The first, at Air de Paris, comprises two new films and a series of new structures. The first film is derived from a filmed tour, in idealised form, of the Kalmar Volvo factory, shot in the early 1970s. The second film is developed from a short clip of a group of car workers sitting inside a metal machine press, having to bend over each time the press.

Florbelle (after Sade) — par Vincent Romagny

Nothing has come down to us of the Marquis de Sade’s last novel, except the title — Les Journées de Florbelle ou La Nature dévoilée (The Days of Florbelle; or, Nature Unveiled) — and jottings he made while rereading the manuscript. Suggestions addressed to himself as if coming from someone else, these Notes pour Les Journées de Florbelle.

Didier Faustino — Le meilleur des mondes

Didier Faustino, guest at the 3rd “Salon de l’Ifa”, is seen as an unconventional character on the contemporary French scene. Both artist and architect, he is known for his avantgarde creations, with a central focus on the body and exacerbation of the senses.

Mathématiques — Un dépaysement soudain

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents the exhibition “Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere”. For this unprecedented event, the foundation has opened its doors to the community of mathematicians and asked artists with whom it has worked closely in the past to accompany them in order to create opportunities for seeing and interpreting mathematics.

Chic art Fair — 2 eme édition

For its second edition, CHIC ART FAIR is again taking up residence in the Cité de la Mode et du Design in Paris, from October 21 to 24. After its striking success last year, CHIC ART FAIR is evolving and extending its field into pluridisciplinary French and international contemporary creation.

Lyndi Sales — Surveillance passive

Central to Lyndi Sales’s recent work is the “real-imaginary”. Possibly utopian, this project nevertheless carries the conviction that by seeking to surpass the limits of perception, new paths become accessible. Her work lies closer to a more complete, more whole vision where everything is connected, whereas we often only experience fragments of reality.

Révision Périphérique

Taking advantage of its location near La Peripherique “Revision Peripherique” concentrates on the interplay of center and periphery at stake in contemporary cities. Six artists explore re-visions of the urban environment, document suburban realities and/or take the city itself as a creative material with which to develop new work.

Elles changent l’Inde

The Petit Palais opened its doors to photography and the contemporary image in 1998, and presents an exhibition on women in India and the evolution of their social status. The exhibition shows 108 images by six Magnum Photos photographers each of whom has chosen a different subject.

Caj Bremer — Photographe

Photographer Caj Bremer is one of the biggest names in post-war Finnish photojournalism. In this exhibition, the Finnish Institute in Paris presents the works of Bremer and his storytelling role as a photographer. Bremer is able to extract the essential into a seemingly simple image often characterised by a subtle sense of humour.

Study of a Territory

Galerie de Roussan presents “ Study of a Territory ”, a group show with Ghislain Amar, Pablo Cavero and Hannah Wade. Conceived and curated by Thomas Arsac, this exhibition presents four young artists whose practice has been inspired by travelling abroad to live in a new territory.
