Cézanne et Paris

Although Cézanne is usually associated with Provence, he cannot be confined to the south of France. He spent more than half of his time as a painter in Paris and its environs. He travelled between Aix en Provence and Paris over twenty times, although, of course, not for the same reasons when he was twenty as when he was sixty.

Stephan Sagmeister

The Austrian artist Stefan Sagmeister, who has lived in New York for the last seventeen years, is one of the most original graphic designers of his generation. Considering that there is no distinction between so-called “cultural” and commercial graphic design he has decided for this exhibition to focus on his commercial work over the last seven years.

Yang Jiechang — Tale of the 11th day

The Galerie Jeanne-Bucher presents a selection of exceptional paintings from the 1990s including the 100 Layers of Ink series. Yang Jiechang’s work was shown outside China for the first time in the 1990s, when he became known for the series of works entitled “One Hundred Layers of Ink”.

Au royaume d’Alexandre le Grand — La Macédoine antique

This exhibition curated by a Greek and French team of specialists brings together five hundred works tracing the history of ancient Macedonia from the fifteenth century B.C. up to the Roman Empire. Visitors are invited to explore the rich artistic heritage of northern Greece, many of whose treasures are still little known to the general public.

Enrico Castellani — Rétrospective

The Tornabuoni Art gallery shows a masterful retrospective devoted to Enrico Castellani through some 45 works of art. Known for his monochromatic embossed canvasses, Castellani is a major Italian figure associated with the ZERO movement who greatly contributed to the development of avant-garde artists in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s.

On retrouve cette clameur muette dans ta nouvelle vidéo, Tableaux homonymes, qui fait penser par moments à Jérôme Bosch, et dont tu mets l’image en mouvement, ou plus exactement en transformation.

Pearls of the North — On n’a pas perdu le Nord

Our exhibition, Pearls of the North, was decided on the spur of the moment, the result of a happy coincidence of events. First of all there was our discovery of, and fascination for, a magic setting, the concrete architectural structure designed by August Perret, finished in 1946 and never previously used to show contemporary art.

Jikken kôbô — L’Atelier expérimental des années 1950

(French only) À l’occasion de l’exposition « Be a speaker. So be it » au CAC Brétigny et de la première exposition rétrospective du collectif Jikken kôbô (Atelier expérimental) au centre d’art Bétonsalon à Paris, la MCJP accueille deux séances de films expérimentaux, pour la plupart inédits en France, dédiées à ce groupe transdisciplinaire fondé en 1951 à Tôkyô.

Sylvain Gelinotte — Homemade circus

Originally the works of Sylvain Gelinotte were meant to represent the world of a circus through everyday elements, neither very rich in their symbolism nor in prestige : a home-made circus, easy to set up in a sitting or dining room in which two characters would find themselves mimicking some dramatic acts typically seen at the circus.

Benjamin Swaim — Salammbô Schreber

(French only) La galerie Jean Brolly présente pour la première fois les œuvres de Benjamin Swaim. À cette occasion, sont présentées des peintures de la série « Salammbô Schreber », de la série « Les sculptures de ma mère » ainsi que des travaux sur papier, « images surpeintes », réalisées à l’encre de Chine.

On retrouve dans cette nouvelle série toutes les controverses qui animent une œuvre ne cessant d’osciller entre grande peinture et bad painting, formalisme et expressionnisme abstrait, naïveté et sophistication.

Karine Rougier — Les points de ressemblances

(French only) Le dessin contemporain est cerné : par la bd (en tout genre), la caricature, le croquis d’architecte, le dessin de mode, l’animation. Autant de disciplines qui bien légitimement ont gagné une certaine autonomie et accédé, il n’y a pas si longtemps, aux salles d’expos. Quant au dessin d’artiste, il a vu ses applications s’élargir singulièrement.

Taking note of this new physiognomy, Alain Bublex attempts to give a face to a metropolis that is only embodied in plans and maps with coloured and abstract lines.

Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and for uncovering the familiar.

Audrey Cottin — Charlie & Sabrina, qui l’eût cru ?

For Satellite series Audrey started several collaborations with her peers engaged in notions of authorship, form and performance. As a first gesture to assess what this potential collaboration may entail Audrey carried a series of lifting exercises: she shifted the position of object in space suspending it in air.

Marion Robin à Paris

Marion Robin shows recent works and a specially adapted project for the café au lit-apartment, created this year in Pont-Aven in the framework of the artist’s residence Les Verrières, in cooperation with CIAC, Centre d’art contemporain.

Colorless green ideas sleep furiously

(French only) « Colorless green ideas sleep furiously » est une phrase inventée en 1957 par Noam Chomsky, linguiste et philosophe américain. Dans Syntactic Structures, il l’utilise comme un exemple de phrase jamais encore prononcée par aucun être humain, syntaxiquement correcte mais sémantiquement absurde. Dépourvu a priori de sens, cet haïku fait écho au chaos ambiant.

Carte blanche à John M. Armleder — All of the Above

As a way of mapping the artist’s brain, desires, and influences, offering carte blanche to an artist provides the opportunity to approach the creative process and the forging of aesthetic links from a novel angle. All of the Above is the rerun in reverse of “None of the Above”, an idiomatic expression.

Shi Shaoping — Métamorphoses

(French only) Shi Shaoping nous livre des représentations de grenouilles, crapauds et autres xénopes. Il ne donne pas dans la taxidermie hyperréaliste, mais dans un registre (post)expressionniste de fière allure, une « maniera » qui a survécu, en les intégrant, au cartoon, au manga et au comic book.

(French only) De New York à Hanovre en passant par Shangai, l’univers graphique d’ Elodie Boutry s’amuse des lieux et des supports à grand renfort de formes géométriques et de couleurs détonnantes. En plein air ou à l’abri d’une galerie, ses créations se jouent des perspectives et reconfigurent les frontières des espaces dans lesquels elles s’inscrivent.

International contemporary art has replaced brush and paint with wool and knitting needles. From 19th October the Maison du Danemark transforms itself into a universe of soft and multi-coloured woollen sculptures and installations. An exhibition which introduces and reveals the evolution of the new contemporary art of knitting and crochet work.

Following Yang Jiechang’s solo exhibition “On Ascension” at the gallery in 2008, the gallery presents a two-part exhibition by the artist entitled “Tale of the 11th day” in our two Paris spaces, left and right bank. Slick 2011 — Contemporary Art Fair

For the second consecutive year, the 2011 Slick Art Fair will be pitching a 2,000m2 marquis tent on the esplanade between the prestigious Palais de Tokyo and Paris’ Museum of Modern Art. More than 40 international galleries and thousands of photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos and installations will be unveiled during the fair.

Over the past 20 years, Tillmans has redefined photography and the way it is presented. Known in the early 1990s for his seemingly casual images of the world he inhabited, his work reassessed photographic conventions and reflected the culture and identity politics of the time, capturing the fragility of human life and focusing on everyday objects.

Aaron Young — Always Forever Now

I always liked the saying “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” It has a nice balance. If I were to name a few things I want out of an artwork they would be aggressive in action, poetic in rythm, realistic in scale, seductive in intellect and sinister in timing. Olivier Kosta-Théfaine — Monde sauvage

On the mode of the appropriation and the diversion, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine extracts characteristic elements of the city to throw them, once reinterpreted, in the exhibition space. By taking support on clichés usually conveyed on the suburb to thwart them better, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine filters and recomposes the codes belonging to the city.

Alex Katz — Face the Music

The American artist Alex Katz presents a new sequence of canvases, studies in oil, cartoons and drawings, all pertaining to dance. One of the undisputed key figures of American pop art, since the early 1950s he was already preparing the way for pop art.

Banks Violette — Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children

Galerie Thaddeus Ropac present an exhibition of works on paper by New York artist, banks Violette. The artist is most well known for his sculptures and large-scale installations that often explore subcultural communities, in a stark, enigmatic yet minimal aesthetics.

Prix Marcel Duchamp

(French only) Mircea Cantor est Lauréat du Prix Marcel Duchamp. Après avoir considéré la qualité des œuvres présentées, le choix du jury s’est porté sur Mircea Cantor a indiqué Alfred Pacquement. L’œuvre dense et protéiforme de cet artiste s’empare de phénomènes issus de la société contemporaine dont il propose des représentations symboliques.

Salon Light #8

(French only) Chaque année, le Cneai organise le Salon Light au Point Ephémère, salon dédié à la micro-édition et à la publication d’artistes. Lancé en 2010, ce prix a pour ambition de contribuer au rayonnement et de favoriser la pratique éditoriale d’un éditeur indépendant.

Visual Thinking and Measured Painting

(French only) Le parcours de Wang Luyan a la particularité d’être aussi rare qu’atypique. Autodidacte, il a néanmoins réussi à s’imposer ce qui lui a valu d’être considéré comme un artiste « alternatif ». Pour sa première exposition en France, Wang Luyan investira les 2 espaces de la galerie où il exposera environ 30 peintures.

Le Royaume et l’Exil — Premier volet : L’urbanité des mediums

For the first time ever, Backslash gallery invite two exhibition curators to the gallery. The guest curators will successively be taking a personal approach to developing two intertwining themes, nature and the urban space. Christophe Le Gac and Gaël Charbau will each be creating a show that draws on an assumed opposition between city and country.

Annette Messager — Mes dessins secrets, Mon guide du tricot et Ma collection de champignons bons et de champignons mortels

(French only) Artiste-collectionneuse et bricoleuse, Annette Messager a réalisé près d’une soixantaine d’albums-collections entre 1972 et 1974. Puisant son inspiration dans les mots, les écritures et les images, l’artiste compose ses albums à partir d’une accumulation de textes, de photographies, de notes et d’articles divers, minutieusement collectionnés et triés.
