Although Cézanne is usually associated with Provence, he cannot be confined to the south of France. He spent more than half of his time as a painter in Paris and its environs. He travelled between Aix en Provence and Paris over twenty times, although, of course, not for the same reasons when he was twenty as when he was sixty.

The Austrian artist Stefan Sagmeister, who has lived in New York for the last seventeen years, is one of the most original graphic designers of his generation. Considering that there is no distinction between so-called “cultural” and commercial graphic design he has decided for this exhibition to focus on his commercial work over the last seven years.

This exhibition curated by a Greek and French team of specialists brings together five hundred works tracing the history of ancient Macedonia from the fifteenth century B.C. up to the Roman Empire. the artist started out by working on the photographic representation of the real before extending her field of investigation a few years ago to the question of the image and to the domain of contemporary art. Since then, she has been conceiving and producing resolutely conceptual pieces that play on words, signs and cultural codes.

The Tornabuoni Art gallery shows a masterful retrospective devoted to Enrico Castellani through some 45 works of art. Known for his monochromatic embossed canvasses, Castellani is a major Italian figure associated with the ZERO movement who greatly contributed to the development of avant-garde artists in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s.

Our exhibition, Pearls of the North, was decided on the spur of the moment, the result of a happy coincidence of events. First of all there was our discovery of, and fascination for, a magic setting, the concrete architectural structure designed by August Perret, finished in 1946 and never previously used to show contemporary art.

Three rooms, three different atmospheres — yet all bathed in a muted, barely visible light. The sun has disappeared, and a generator-powered artificial moon has stepped in, shining its pale beams. “Basse Tension” is the world that is found at the end of the road. A world where there is just enough electricity to keep us alive. But for how much longer?

Entering Tia Calli Borlase’s world is entering an uncommon environment of objects in which the artist creates “unique three-dimensional arrangements”, according to the art critic Paul Ardenne, made from re-thinking and re-assembling everyday materials into a metaphoric re-use.

Originally the works of Sylvain Gelinotte were meant to represent the world of a circus through everyday elements, neither very rich in their symbolism nor in prestige : a home-made circus, easy to set up in a sitting or dining room in which two characters would find themselves mimicking some dramatic acts typically seen at the circus.

Being the child of an important figure is certainly not easy. It is necessary to make, if not a name, at least a first name for oneself. This requires great strength of character but the presence of the father or mother enables a liberating conflict.

In 1976 Braco Dimitrijevic made a gesture without precedent: he included original paintings of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Picasso into his own installations. The installations for which the artist coined the generic title Triptychos Post Historicus, included paintings by modern masters together with everyday objects.

Paris has become ‘Grand Paris’, and must push its historic metro and ring road borders further out so as to unfold the length of the regional express train (RER) and tram tracks. Taking note of this new physiognomy, Alain Bublex attempts to give a face to a metropolis that is only embodied in plans and maps with coloured and abstract lines.

Diane Arbus revolutionized the art she practiced. Her bold subject matter and photographic approach produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and for uncovering the familiar.

(French only) « Colorless green ideas sleep furiously » est une phrase inventée en 1957 par Noam Chomsky, linguiste et philosophe américain. Dépourvu a priori de sens, cet haïku fait écho au chaos ambiant.

As a way of mapping the artist’s brain, desires, and influences, offering carte blanche to an artist provides the opportunity to approach the creative process and the forging of aesthetic links from a novel angle. All of the Above is the rerun in reverse of “None of the Above”, an idiomatic expression.

Over the past 20 years, Tillmans has redefined photography and the way it is presented. Known in the early 1990s for his seemingly casual images of the world he inhabited, his work reassessed photographic conventions and reflected the culture and identity politics of the time, capturing the fragility of human life and focusing on everyday objects.

I always liked the saying “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” It has a nice balance. If I were to name a few things I want out of an artwork they would be aggressive in action, poetic in rythm, realistic in scale, seductive in intellect and sinister in timing. Also, better if you have to use a hammer! Aaron Young.

On the mode of the appropriation and the diversion, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine extracts characteristic elements of the city to throw them, once reinterpreted, in the exhibition space. By taking support on clichés usually conveyed on the suburb to thwart them better, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine filters and recomposes the codes belonging to the city.
