La Tyrannie des Objets

Artists and designers find themselves imagining indomitable objects that cast a critical light on rational, constraining or downright authoritarian production patterns. David Dubois’ scenography underlines this shifting power relation between objects and their owners.

Pasolini Roma

As well as a first rate cinematographer, Pier Paolo Pasolini was also a poet, linguist, novelist, playwright, intimiste painter and activist. He was one of the most active intellectuals and one of the most controversial characters in the post second world war period. The exhibition proposes a chronological survey of the great stages of his relationship with Rome.

Shirley Wegner

Wegner does not reconstruct existing or readymade photographs, rather, she leans on a pre-existing visual collective knowledge, and animates landscape pictures that have previously been imprinted into our private and collective consciousness.

Vivian Maier

During the 50s and 60s, Vivian Maier tirelessly photographed the streets of New York and Chicago, focusing on the city’s human dimension in precisely composed black and white photographs with striking personality. Various self-portraits suggest the mystery of a woman who gave her life to photography.

Angkor — Naissance d’un mythe

The exhibition shows how the Khmer heritage was rediscovered and how the monuments of Angkor were displayed to the audience of the time during spectacular Universal and Colonial Exhibitions.

Yousuf Karsh — Icônes du XXe siècle

The remarkable artistic career of Yousuf Karsh was matched only by the extraordinary lives of cultural, political, artistic and intellectual figures that he photographed. The exhibition celebrates Karsh’s exceptional contribution to shaping personal and historical memory throughout the twentieth century.

(French only) Dans les salles reconfigurées de la galerie d’art graphique et la galerie du musée, exceptionnellement réunies pour l’occasion, cette présentation inédite réunit quelques trois cents dessins choisis parmi l’ensemble de 1200 œuvres que compte la donation Florence et Daniel Guerlain.

La cime du rêve — Les surréalistes et Victor Hugo

(French only) La Cime du rêve juxtapose de façon inédite une cinquantaine de dessins de Hugo et des œuvres majeures des surréalistes. L’exposition s’attache à rechercher les points de contact, les affinités avouées ou non, revendiquées ou pas entre l’un et les autres — sur un plan littéraire ainsi que sur le plan plastique.

Emeric Lhuisset — À l’Ouest rien de nouveau

(French only) Emeric Lhuisset poursuit depuis plusieurs années un travail d’investigation sur les zones de combats actuels et interroge de manière distanciée la question de la représentation de la guerre. L’ensemble de son œuvre rend compte de cette relation entre art contemporain et photojournalisme, si riche mais aussi surtout si floue et si déconcertante.

Jérôme Zonder  — Chairs grises

“This exhibition places us at the heart of a story without necessarily offering the keys to a narrative: the drawings describe a fragmented and shattered story, with its edges covered in bumps and lumps. The narrative spaces mix, connect and combine each other like they would in the brain” — Léa Bismuth.

Biennale JCE — Jeune Création Européenne — Edition 2013-2015

(French only) La Biennale JCE est un projet d’avant-garde initié par la Ville de Montrouge et diffusé dans toute l’Europe. Au cœur du projet se trouve l’idée d’un réseau de villes qui soutiennent les talents émergents en art contemporain. L’édition 2013/2015 présente 54 jeunes talents provenant de 9 pays d’Europe.

Jean Cousin père et fils — Une famille de peintres au XVIe siècle

(French only) A travers un choix de 60 œuvres, l’exposition est l’occasion de rendre justice à cet artiste protéiforme, figure centrale du maniérisme français. Elle met en lumière l’originalité et l’importance du style de Jean Cousin et cherche à distinguer l’œuvre de Jean Cousin Père de celle de son fils, qui porte le même nom.

Les origines de l’estampe en Europe du Nord — 1400-1470

(French only) Les premières estampes naquirent dans un contexte de bouillonnement expérimental incroyable, dont l’exposition souhaite rendre compte en montrant ensemble des œuvres fort différentes par leur esthétique. Si les estampes circulèrent très vite partout en Europe, les régions germaniques furent le foyer principal du phénomène.

Cookbook — L’art et le processus culinaire

The second exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts explores the relations between art and the culinary, examining their common approach to the transformation of materials.

Zeng Fanzhi

Zeng Fanzhi has been deploying since the 1990s a distinctive language marked by his kinship with both Asian art and the many Western influences he has been subjected to. Zeng Fanzhi uses many different styles and themes. He combines a rigorous spirit of painterly and intellectual investigation with great technical control.

Catherine Ceresole — Other Music

Originally from the town Rolle, Catherine Ceresole set foot in New York in 1979. Soon after, she began to photograph rock concerts notably those of the emerging Sonic Youth. She offered her photos to the guitarist Thurston Moore who liked them and encouraged her to continue. For 12 years, she flitted between CBGB, the Danceteria and other rock and experimental venues.

Nøne Futbol Club — The Bold & the Beautiful

Eternal youth, the cult of the body and the pursuit of wealth are the artistic duo’s chosen themes for the second solo exhibition at the Republic Gallery. The Nøne Futbol Club takes the mass culture stereotypes of the human figure and presents a sharp criticism.

Eugene von Bruenchenhein — American Beauty

Thanks to his prolific photographic output, mainly comprising pictures of his wife, Von Bruenchenhein’s renown has extended far beyond the amateur circles of Art Brut.

Raphaël Denis — Œuvres d’Anderlecht

(French only) Raphaël Denis génère un travail de perturbation qui ouvre une réflexion axée sur les vocabulaires de l’art contemporain. Conscient des enjeux et de la complexité du milieu, il pose son regard sur ce qui le régit et l’alimente. Le sourire en coin, il souligne les dérives et la standardisation des formes et des concepts.

Théâtre du monde

Entitled Theatre du monde in reference to the work carried out for François 1st by Giulio Camillo on theatre and memory, the exhibition offers new interpretations in the face of prevailing historical discourse, using the eye as an active instrument of investigation and to help understand reality.

Paul Armand Gette — Des calcinations au Jaune de Naples

(French only) Pour cette exposition, Paul Armand Gette renoue avec quelques œuvres du passé, les Calcinations, qui datent des années 1960. Elles ne sont en aucun cas des représentations d’objets brûlés mais des reliefs en papier imprégné d’émulsion de résine vinylique chargée d’oxyde de fer noir.

Peter Buggenhout — Ni chair, ni poisson

The work of Buggenhout offers an iconoclastic approach to sculpture, beyond any normativity, playing with the codes of attraction and repulsion. These works of shapelessness avoid paraphrasing reality, admit no referent and embrace the assumption of chaos and madness. Here appears the surface of life’s backside.

Phantom Sun

This exhibition intends to bring together the works of artists integrating the sun and natural elements into their work. Working across various mediums with raw materials and exposure to nature, artists engage an experimental process of creation finding a balance of control and release.

Eberhard Havekost — La fin et le lever du jour

Eberhard Havekost does not invent any of the images he paints. Everything already exists, everything is culled and pillaged from a reality where all the images have already been produced , showned, overused. Eberhard Havekost paintings invent nothing and do not even render a memory he might have had of such and such event, lanscape or sensation.

Jochen Gerner — Second plan

(French only) Jochen Gerner conceptualise tout ce qu’il touche. Cartes postales, « Comics », publications, notations, etc. C’est une sorte de Georges Perec des arts plastiques. Très littéraire, chaque œuvre part d’une idée, d’une contrainte, d’une ligne à suivre.

Olivier Kosta-Théfaine — En flânant...

Anthony McCall — Face to face IV

(French only) Ce sculpteur de l’immatériel présente, pour la première fois, une double projection dont les images se font face et offre dans un jeu continu une chorégraphie nouvelle où les lignes se répondent et s’accordent. De la variété de courbes et de droites émerge un dialogue qui confère une dimension narrative à l’œuvre.

Frida et moi — Une exposition-atelier autour de Frida Kahlo

(French only) La Galerie des enfants propose une exposition-atelier autour de Frida Kahlo, conçue comme un espace de sensibilisation à l’univers de l’artiste pour les enfants de 5 à 10 ans. Dans un parcours libre et poétique, une série de dispositifs ludiques permettent de voyager dans l’œuvre et la vie de la célèbre artiste mexicaine.

The festival will bring together over 100 established and emerging artists from 26 countries to propose an in-depth look into contemporary performance. The event will open in Tallinn, Estonia, continue on in Finland for the remaining of the program, and end with a dual event in Helsinki and Paris.

Nicolas Dhervillers — Hommages — Photographies

(French only) Les personnages sont nombreux à se déplacer, d’une toile de maître à un tableau photographique, de l’huile au numérique. Ils ne sont pas des touristes cherchant un sens à l’existence sans bagage ni destin. Ils sont des présences, pénétrantes, avec une histoire, une grande et longue histoire qui vient se coller comme une évidence dans une géographie nouvelle.

Yan Pei-Ming — Help!

With Help!, the portrait, the history painting and the vanity are presented on the three floors of the gallery in the Marais. In a dialectical and pictorial relation, the secular theme of war and peace enter into confrontation in the main gallery space whereas the icon embodied in the portrait genre and the works on paper are presented on the other two floors of the gallery.

L’école en images — Décors parisiens des années 1930

The original exhibition presents decorations painted for the nurseries and primary schools of Paris from 1880 to 1935. The 80 original sketches, which are being exhibited for the first time at the Petit Palais, illustrate the role of these decorations in terms of the diffusion of a modern philosophy applied to pedagogy and the child’s environment.

Philippe Rahm — Rémanence Chlorophyllienne

Keith Sonnier’s early use of neon as a central material was essential to his practice and later to the development of a broader contemporary art practice. It was from these early works that Sonnier went on to investigate large scale installations in which spacial perception relative to the environment reached its zenith.

LI Wei — Confessionnal

(French only) À travers l’exposé de ses émotions les plus intimes, Li Wei arrive à nous transpercer de ses œuvres en mettant en exergue la réalité et l’illusion de notre quotidien. La coexistence de ces deux extrêmes fait ressurgir une tension symbolisant comme un « fil du rasoir » sur lequel joue, et sur lequel a décidé de jouer sans cesse l’espèce humaine.

A triple tour — Collection Pinault

(French only) Les œuvres de la collection Pinault présentées à la Conciergerie illustrent le caractère protéiforme de l’enfermement, qu’il s’entende au sens physique ou mental ; généralement subi, il est quelquefois le résultat d’un choix assumé, tantôt une reddition, tantôt une réaction. D’où l’interrogation : subissons-nous notre propre destin ou en sommes-nous les maîtres ?

Art Orienté Objet — Le Jardin des délices

(French only) Les artistes Marion Laval-Jeantet et Benoît Mangin viennent insérer dans les collections permanentes du musée de la Chasse et de la Nature une trentaine de leurs œuvres (installations, objets, vidéos et photographies) dont certaines inédites et créées spécialement pour l’exposition, explorant un autre type de relation entre l’homme, l’animal et la nature.
