The notion of document often examines the very ontology of artworks. From the document as source, the document as artwork and the document as link, it appears that the idea of the document doesn’t exist per se, but rather in complex and multi-relational networks with artworks, to the point that at times they intertwine.

Georges Braque was a painter, engraver and sculptor, but first, as the founder of cubism and the inventor of pasted papers, one of the leading figures in the avant-garde of the early twentieth century before focusing definitively on methodical, serial exploration of still life and landscape painting, which made him the French painter par excellence.

Still hard at work more than thirty years after Rubens’ death in 1640, Jordaens’ long career and the ability to turn out sizable, dazzling canvases with the assistance of a rigorously organised workshop, saw him provide a whole section of Europe with altar paintings and large, mythological compositions.

Among the main unexplored terrains, before the cosmos and the oceanic depths, our own inner depths are without doubt the most remote. We are all, to some degree, geometricians, measurers, investigators of it, but only a small delegation is authorised to immerse themselves and dig out a mysterious mud.

Originating from the emerging art scene, the artists summarise and reprise the traditional modes of landscape representation, drawing on its plasticity and universality. Associating with the impressionist character the beginnings of abstraction, they define new interpretations and aim at a substantial restitution of the landscape, more than an empathic representation.

“Curiosity is a vice that has been stigmatized in turn by Christianity, by philosophy, and even by a certain conception of science. Curiosity, futility. The word, however, pleases me. To me it suggests something altogether different: it evokes ‘concern’; it evokes the care one takes for what exists and could exist” — Michel Foucault.

Richard Tuttle is one of the most singular and influential artists working today, whose extraordinary work eludes classification and dissolves the boundaries of sculpture, painting, drawing, installation and printmaking. He has consistently expanded our understanding of the art object’s relationship to space and subtly redefined our expectations of sculpture.
