Asseyez-vous ! — Mobilier et Dessins de Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl is considered as the father of Scandinavian design. His renown became rapidly global thanks to the unusual design of his furniture, at the same time expressive and sculptural. It was ultimately created to be used. The Maison du Danemark is proposing an exhibition where for once visitors are allowed to touch and sit on the furniture.

(French only) Voilée-dévoilée, enchaînée-déchaînée, la sculpture monumentale que propose Loris Gréaud, pour la pyramide de Pei a toutes les caractéristiques du fantôme ou du revenant. Son œuvre est en effet depuis les origines hantée par l’effet spectral, tant des silhouettes, des sons, des lumières, que celui d’autres œuvres qu’il réactive à sa manière.

Un allemand à la cour de Louis XIV — De Dürer à Van Dyck, la collection d’Everhard Jabach

Everhard Jabach was one of the greatest collectors of his time. The masterpieces brought together here illustrate the importance of a man who, not content simply to plead the cause of Northern Art to the king of France and his painters, helped shape the French taste for the Northern schools until the eighteenth century.

My Joburg takes in a range of art from Johannesburg, with particular emphasis on young artists who have yet to come to public attention in France. My Joburg highlights the diversity and wealth of the Johannesburg art scene by showing recent work by more than 40 artists representing the city’s last three generations.

(French only) Motionless Travellers est un projet de Stéphane Trois Carrés, une performance interactive online via Skype, entre Canterbury, Brooklyn et Saint-Denis. Un jeu de miroirs vidéos permettant de collaborer instantanément à travers le réseau, de dessiner à distance en direct, depuis les espaces de création des artistes.

Say Whatt ? — La Culture du Sound System

(French only) Où qu’elle pose ses enceintes, la sound system culture est toujours un phénomène à la marge, mal connu, méconnu, puisant ses origines dans un besoin de la rue. Via l’onde sonore du sound system, Say Watt ? guide le visiteur de ses débuts jamaïcains jusqu’à ses extrapolations dans l’art contemporain, en passant par ses contributions à la culture Do It yourself.

Nouvelles Vagues — 53 expositions dans tout Paris et au Palais de Tokyo

After “Cold Sun”, Palais de Tokyo, along with thirty galleries and art spaces throughout Paris, innovates once more to emphasize the emergence of the figure of the curator. At Palais de Tokyo, “Nouvelles vagues” (New Waves) is a large-scale event organized by 21 international young curators.

The Shining Path

Common problematics can be found in the works of Lisa Beck, Bruno Jakob and Martin Widmer. They all have similar tendencies to produce paradox in the form of the work of art. The art pieces exhibited here seem to call up strange external forces which question their objects and threaten their legitimacy.

Sur la mauvaise pente

For the curator Nabila Mokrani, to rethink the traditional exhibition format through scenography or set design is to start from a ground based point of view — the relevant place to consider a hanging — to allow the effect of vertigo to take hold and to defy for a time the immobility of the body.

Historico vagabond

Historico-vagabond seeks to create a temporal paradox. Rewriting history is a potential tool for positive change. Rather than looking toward the future as the modernist utopias did, by travelling back in time to create a deviation and then offering an alternate timeline, we might change the past with the effect of magnifying the present.

Bruissements

The exhibition extends across two geographies: both the exhibition within the gallery and an evolving space on the internet, hosting a literary experience offered by Arnaud Maïsetti. By writing a text which is in continual transformation — it is to be updated every day in the exhibition — he involves the viewer in writing which is in a constant state of flux.

Hyperliens — Le QR code comme média vers l’œuvre

(French only) La Galerie Véronique Smagghe et la curator Sophie Zante présentent Hyperliens : le QR code comme média vers l’œuvre, en invitant deux jeunes plasticiens au sein de son espace : Florentine et Alexandre Lamarche-Ovize. L’espace invite le visiteur dans un lieu symbolique et fantomatique qui joue avec le plein, le vide, la présence et l’absence.

Bruno Réquillart — Hors les murs au Château de Tours

After Jacques Henri Lartigue, at the Château de Tours, the Jeu de Paume explore a radically different photographic style in the solo show devoted to Bruno Réquillart. The exhibition, conceived in close collaboration with Bruno Réquillart, proposes a retrospective survey of his past work and unveils for the first time his work in progress.

(French only) La galerie Catherine Putman présente les estampes monumentales de six artistes. Ils ont chacun leur univers singulier mais tous utilisent la gravure comme un art à part entière. Leur familiarité avec l’estampe les a amenés à travailler en grand format, faisant appel aux diverses techniques que sont la xylographie, l’eau forte, la linogravure ou la lithographie.

The purpose of this exhibition is to explore the subtexts and links between the artists’ practices, even though the individual’s work may appear in multiple manifestations. Exploring how an audience might make sense of disparate works by an individual artist, “Degrees of Separation” questions the persistence of commercial trends, whilst expanding the constraints of stylistic interpretation.

Forming the Loss in Darkness — curated by Jo-ey Tang

In the super-8 film by David Wojnarowicztitled, the black-and-white film turns into color at precisely the moment when its central character came into contact with an upstate New York lake in what appears to be a suicide attempt. Tracking the journey from slumber to death, nine artists’ works set an alternative mise-en-scène of the rarely-screened film.

Alice De Mont — Retroperspectief

For the first monographic presentation of her work outside her native Belgium, Alice De Mont filmed her exhibition in the process of being laid out at Galerie Dohyang Lee several months before the show was in fact set up. In this new film, the artist places two characters in the situation of mounting a show, with a piece of sculpture and several layout plans.

Où est jack Goldstein ?

Jack Goldstein staged performances, minimalist sculptures — but also vinyl records designed to be art objects that recreate archetypal, often disturbing sound bites. Goldstein’s 16 mm short-films — which he hired Hollywood technicians to make — emphasize the clichés of American cinema through repetitive emblematic scenes.

Cabinet Da-End 03 — Nouvel Accrochage

For its third season, Galerie Da-End has invited over thirty artists to create a contemporary “cabinet de curiosités” with a floral theme. Blossoming in this distinctive place, the flowers seem to probe our ability to rethink mankind and above all, to explore its less appealing side. In this case specifically to “extract beauty from evil”.

Art of Living — i.e. Goodbye Blue Monday

This show grew out of a conversation between Philippe and Frédérique Valentin and the artist Luca Francesconi. The project proposed to bring into the gallery space pieces of either lived or mental life, and to put together a show in which the works would be made up of objects from reality. These offer the viewer a certain imagination and hence an open semantic feld.

Les Bains / Résidence d’artistes — Photo Show

(French only) Cette exposition des photographies de Stéphane Bisseuil et Jérôme Coton retrace la résidence d’artistes éphémère des Bains et le travail réalisé alors par 50 artistes. De janvier à avril 2013, les artistes ont investi les 3000 m² de ce mythique immeuble datant de 1885. Seuls autorisés à pénétrer cet antre et rejoindre…

Bande à Part offers a selection of videos by artists of the gallery that were not or scarcely presented to the public before. Four monitors invite the spectator to navigate through the works. One can follow the program, or choose one’s own trajectory.

Hospitalités — Galerie municipale Jean-Collet

The two winning artists of the 2012 “Novembre à Vitry” prize present a pictorial dialogue: Maude Maris’ paintings present glistening forms in an anonymous space, whose size and functionality eludes us, whereas Julien Pelloux presents paintings which find their origin in everyday images.

Invited to develop a project especially for the nave of MAC/VAL, the artist Dominique Blais focused on the various links between the museum, the architecture in which it is housed, the works which inhabit it and the public contemplating them and in a sense bringing them to life. The MAC/VAL has also invited Ange Leccia for an original monographic exhibition.

Hospitalités — le Crédac

Invited in 2010 to carry out research on the Ivry-sur-Seine area, Lara Almarcegui turned towards the underground aspect of the town. The exhibition accordingly unites a number of the artist’s projects around a new publication entitled Ivry souterrain.

This exhibition gives an opportunity to highlight the view of Charles Ratton, an expert, dealer and collector who changed the history of the way “primitive” art was received, by promoting objects which moved away from the taste for “negro” art that had prevailed up to that time.
