“In the middle of nowhere” is a paradoxical expression with a wide range of connotations (from irony to poetry, from disenchantment to contemplation), it is used to refer to an object or a place from a relatively unplaceable space. It indicates a remote thing or location that is out of the ordinary or that juts out unexpectedly from the flat immensity plane.

In “The Thirty-Two Inch Ruler”, the narrative, whilst not autobiographical, is about a neighborhood in which John Gossage lives; one that is singular in the United States. At the same time provincial and international, it is a neighborhood populated by ambassadorial residences and the lavish private homes of those who are in positions of power in Washington.

Form 1988 to 1990, Daido Moriyama lived in Paris first on rue Mouffetard, then on rue du Cherche-midi. In 1999, photographs from his stay were published, almost confidentially, in the “Visions of Japan” collection curated by Japanese editor Korinsha. Polka Galerie is proud to present a selection of thirty prints from this series never exhibited before.

In 1967, Andy Warhol’s silkscreens were exhibited for the first time in Japan. 29-year-old Daido Moriyama showed an immediate interest for this artisanal technique, which he saw as an obvious extension of photography.

The Fondation Cartier presents the first European exhibition dedicated to Yue Minjun. The artist directs the same howl of laughter at the face of the world that reflects whatever one wants to see in it: a caricature of the homogenization of Chinese Society, a way of “grinning and bearing it” in a world that has become absurd or a form of self-derision.

« je n’ai pas dans l’idée d’être provocant. D’ailleurs, pour moi, la provocation pour la provocation ne sert strictement à rien. » C’est au contraire de nos aptitudes à stéréotyper ce qui nous entoure dont se joue l’artiste.

What first strikes the viewer about Matthieu Ronsse’s work is his remarkable mastery of the paintbrush and his almost casual method of selecting his materials and his artworks. In 2000, Ziad Antar began using black and white rolls of film that had expired in 1976 in the legendary Scheherazade studio of photographer Hashem El Madani. The camera he uses for the series “Expired” is itself old. The subject however, is of the utmost contemporaneity: buildings synonymous with modernity, such as the Queensboro Bridge in New York.
